Every October, I went on a binge horror films, revisiting some old favorites, discover new and classic horror titles for me in the mood for Halloween. This feature is actually two anthology of stories that are horrifying, sometimes campy, but they are all in high gothic atmosphere and suspense. In "Twice Told Tales", the three stories are not present good adaptation of the original sources, but are still worth seeing just to watch the incomparable Vincent Price. Thestories here are very loosely adapted from the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne.br / br / The first story "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" is perhaps the best of the three – focuses on two old friends who suddenly finds the source of life and youth dripping ceiling a crypt. Soon, the two friends restore their youth and also bring a long dead corpse back to life, but find that some things are best left as is. "Rappacini's Daughter" is the weakest of the three – Vincent Pricestars as Dr. Rappacini, whose possessiveness of his daughter goes to lengths literally toxic with predictable tragic consequences. The plot here is rather cumbersome and lacked credibility as the story felt rushed through.br / br / Finally, in "The House of Seven Gables," Gerald Pycheon (Price) returns to his ancestral home damn much to the chagrin of his estranged sister and the horror of his wife, who feels a push instead. This story would have played much better if it hadlimited to the ridiculous length of about 35 minutes [imagine an entire novel was reduced in a] short story and it all sounds quickly and suddenly the story ends up being more of a farce horror.br true / br / The "Tales of Terror "DVD contains adaptations of stories by Edgar Allan Poe, which are all produced and directed by the genius of Roger Corman. The first story "Morella" is about Lenora, a young girl (played by Debra Paget) who returns after many years of itsancestral home, only to find her strange and almost deranged father (Price) stumble home in a state of torpor, and the horrors of horrors, while preserving the remains of his dead wife, Morella in one of the bedrooms. Not long after, Lenora is 'visited' by the vengeful spirit of Morella and all hell literally breaks loose. This first story is the shortest of the trio. The next story "The Black Cat" is actually a combination of Poe's "The Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado," which leadswith the dark comic talent and money and Peter Lorre, and is quite funny (watch out for throwing his head scene). Price plays his role perfectly especially comical. In the final story, "The Case of Mr. Valdemar," Basil Rathbone plays a Mesmer (hypnotist), who decides to experience the unknown, ie putting a man (money) in a state of hypnosis on his deathbed, with horrific results. br / br / All in all, I'd recommend this for fans of Vincent Price classichorror with a high dose of suspense and gothic atmosphere.
