With the release of fifth album Twelfth Night, Brooklyn-based folk band Hem band can add a lot of support for the Bard to their curriculum. When Tony Award-winning director Daniel Sullivan's Public Theater and Shakespeare in the Park program has brought the much-loved romantic comedy Delacorte Theater in Central Park last summer, Hem brought the soundtrack.
br / br / E 'a more lively and diverse band of a mile from town, but for an album called Twelfth Night Hem correct is a bit'misleading. Certainly, the evocative, songcraft family of Gary Maurer and Steve Curtis are all over the album, with Dan Mass lush string arrangements. The atmosphere and the melody of "Come Away Death" eco "We'll Meet Along the Way" from last album Hem, Funnel Cloud, and stirring interlude "Not Too Fast! Soft Soft!" could be an outtake from 2004's Eveningland.
br / br / But instead of lead vocalist Sally Ellyson of Hem, is the voice of the twelfth night cast members of the foregroundincluding Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada, The Princess Diaries), and veterans of Broadway Raúl Esparza and David Pittu. How to cheat Twelfth Night's Feste, strong voice Pittu's carry "Mistress Mine" and "Hey Robin Jolly Robin. Hathaway efforts on the album are useful, but the Lightning is only a duet with Audra McDonald in "Full Phathom Five," a bonus track written by Messe inspired by another classic by Shakespeare, The Tempest. Esparza brings a keen taste for his songsespecially the all too brief "Where is Fancy Bred?"
br / br / Rather than providing the usual support to the original acoustic folk Hem-based, two full-bodied orchestra is actually driving the songs in Twelfth Night. The Gowanus Radio Orchestra, which formed as a band tour Hem, in 2006, and the Illyrian Marching Band (aka a collection of rotating members of the band Hem and classically trained musicians of rental) are co-credited to individual tracks. br / br / Also removed from Twelfth Nightfolio, amplitude of the album arrangements, from simple voice and guitar to full orchestra coils makes transporting to listen, a tableau of extraordinary mystical, imaginative, and intimate. Messé mix of polkas, reels and Buenos hopscotches between European musical tradition, which evokes a cosmopolitan air, without being too gross or obvious.
br / br / 28 tracks may seem a lot to absorb, but many clock in less than a minute, and several are reinventions or variations on the sametheme. Recommended for fans of literary mind Hem, Over the Rhine, and the Decemberists.br /

“Twelfth Night Discount” Overview
2009 album from one of the most distinctive and emotionally rewarding bands in American music. This summer, Hem joined forces with The Public Theater’s Shakespeare In The Park (one of NYC’s most celebrated annual offerings) to compose the score for their production of Twelfth Night. The production was directed by Daniel Sullivan, and starred Anne Hathaway, Audra McDonald, Raul Esparza, Jon Patrick Walker, and David Pittu, along with a host of other actors and musicians. The songs on the album, Twelfth Night, are more lush and clear than possible in an outdoor theater, and also included are bonus songs not in the show. These additional tracks are thematically relevant to the Twelfth Night characters but have roots in other Shakespearean plays. In particular, the song ‘Where Is Fancy Bred?’ (from The Merchant of Venice) sung by Orsino (Ra£l Esparza) is spectacular, with a melody and orchestration that creates a goosebump extravaganza that made jaws drop each time the song rang through the studio.
