The American Frugal Housewife

I got this book over 10 years ago at the gift shop in Sturbridge Village, and I swear, I read so much that I probably have memorized whole sections! This is undoubtedly the best book of its kind.pThe American Frugal housewife is fascinating on a variety of levels, not least in that Child wrote the book with the emphasis on "American." Other books exist at the time, but they were written in England and English women. Child is one of the transcendentalists who were greatSupporters of personal self-discipline and restraint, but it is believed that their hearts the importance of fighting for what he knew was right. It was not just a religious fervor, even if the child's Christianity, like that of Catherine and Harriet Beecher Stowe, was extremely important – but the conviction that the still relatively new in the United States had a unique destiny that set it apart from the rest of world, particularly the world was old and decrepit that it was not nationalist Europe.pChild blindfoldedhowever. He saw the flaws and contradictions that surround the new Republic. Child, like many other transcendentalists, was a fervent abolitionist and a supporter of women's equality, and worked all his life towards reaching those goals. Even with its problems, Child was an ardent American. He saw Americans as a single race of people with a unique and powerful destiny. The Americans believed, were new and unique, and that the American destiny was very different from that degenerated, rotting hulkOld World Europe.pSo what all this has to do with the American Frugal Housewife? Well, Child wrote the book specifically to address Houswives American and what he knew to be their unique problems and issues. It 'much more than just a cookbook, but embodies the philosophy of the child that the only path to virtue was self-restraint and sobriety, and that the way to tutor the new nation in these values has been teaching home-nation – the hand that rocks the cradle, Childbelieved, did indeed rule the new nation world.pThe was becoming prosperous, and the Child since then, as now, people had a hard time learning how to stay financially. One part in particular has to do with mothers should raise their daughters. Children believe they should teach their children the virtues of frugality, it was better to put savings "at Interest" and gain wealth from it, then to indulge in the latest fashion – one in this case, being a thing calledBrussels carpet. As a new bride came to establish their family, son of lessons on how to help their husbands to bankruptcy, embracing trends and trying to keep pace with Joneses.pOther, cheaper types of carpet "will respond equally well" Child, has written. It is advisable to also use the illustrations on the cheap, well framed as wall art, rather than go overboard and buy the latest European style.pSome best sections are in frugality. Child is the "Tips from Heloise" queen of her time, andHas a solution for everything that could possibly affect the home of the 19th century. The interesting thing, as others have noticed, is like many of his suggestions work well.pI not know yet as I'm ever gonna need you instructions on how soap dispenser in my own backyard kettle or how to keep my pickles Homemade in a barrel to turn soft, but I did get a burn mark a box using old rottenstone and oil, just like you prescribed.pWhat 's rottenstone, you ask? Well, you can buy at a hardware store, but if you want the recipe, buy the book! It 's a fantastic window on early American life, but the advice of sound inside, not about getting into debt and how to "up your brass so that it does not tarnish, is still surprisingly useful.pI guarantee you'll become a Child fan, just like me! :)

fascinating facsimile – Jennifer Motl – Milwaukee, WI USA
Great historical reference book full of recipes for food (some of which we would now consider very strange) ways to clean things up, sermons on morality, and other delicacies from a woman who was very progressive in his time.

Mostly useful as a historical reference – Sprite Nevada –
Fascinating look into the past. I think some people might think this book has some good old-fashioned ways to go green, if you're interested or off the grid or survival stuff or whatever (just wide of the medical section. Fear Factor anyone?) But I think is especially useful as a historical reference. A great insight logic then. Yet it was still fun to run your imagination dreams of doing some of these things. Furthermore, if you plan to do some 'reading the story becausenot go directly to the source on this particular topic? The chapter on raiseing girls was very modern in some ways surprising, I expected to sit and be quite a chapter, but thats not what I got. For the price I think it was worth it.

Good Old Fashioned Adviced – Donna Stanfield –
I really like this book. It would probably be a typical feature of mid-class family of high class, but for those who like to be frugal is wonderful! Most of the suggestions and instructions are a bit 'obsolete for the present, but something gives you a reading guide for living a more frugal and less expensively. Teaches you to appreciate a simple life.

Delightful – Dwight – USA
I think it's very funny that does not waste paper to dive right in with suggestions and not worry about wander paragraphs. I actually like this more than stingy Gazette, trying not to be too preachy. Not Mrs. Childs, she is my kind of charismatic and is preaching to the choir! I wish I lived as frugally as I should, but this book is wonderfully invigorating. His analysis of consumerism is still true today.
